The largest inactive and completely intact volcanic caldera on Earth, this vast crater was created when a massive volcano erupted and collapsed around two to three million years ago. It reaches a depth of about 610 metres (2,000 feet) and spans roughly 260 square kilometres (100 square miles) across its floor. Scientists estimate the original volcano once stood between 4,500 and 5,800 metres (14,800 to 19,000 feet) tall. Today, the caldera supports a rich ecosystem, home to thousands of animals, birds, insects, and other forms of wildlife.
